World Health Day

Today is world health day! What a great day. My son and I started the day off with a 3 mile run. Today is a great day to reflect on your own health and what you can do to improve it. Health and wellness is a journey, not a destination, so there are things we can all do to improve our current and future health.

Did you know that the food on our plate can affect our health, but the foods off of our plate can affect our overall health even more. We call this primary foods. These are the foods that feed us and nourish our body, mind and spirit. Basically, it feeds our whole self. When we look at primary foods, we look at:

  • Relationships

  • Spirituality

  • Home environment

  • Career/work

  • Joy

  • Cooking at home

  • Education

  • Finances

  • Physical activity

  • Health

  • Social life

  • Creativity

If you imagine a see saw from when you were a child. Put yourself on one side of the see saw and all 12 of these things. When you are in balance with these areas of your life, the see saw will be balanced. When any of these things are not in balance or not feeding you, the see saw will be out of balance. This will have a negative affect on your overall health and wellbeing.

When you work with a health coach, we look at all of these areas and work with you on balancing your see saw. We'll look at nutrition as well, but ultimately, your nutrition habits will stem back to one of these areas. For example, maybe you overeat, but it only happens when you're stressed. If you try to put habits in place to address the eating, but you don't address the stress, you're not going to level out the see saw and you'll continue to turn to food when stressed.

So, this World Health Day, I'd like to challenge you to think differently about your health. I challenge you to pick one of these areas that you'd like to improve and come up with one thing you can change or do differently to improve that area. What will that be for you?
